Copycat Starbucks "Plant Based Protein" Drink

Kudos for Starbucks...they're coming around...SLOWLY! But are their new plant based drinks any good? And is it worth $6!? Here, I answer both questions and supply you with a delicious, and much cheaper alternative!




So to keep up with the increased consumer demand for plant based options, Starbucks has jumped on the bandwagon and introduced their "Plant Based Protein" Drinks that come in Cacao and Almond flavor.


So How Did It Taste??

When asked by my girls what I gave it on a scale from 1 to 10, I said maybe a 3. For 6 bucks I knew I could do better and make it healthier! So off to work I went.


What's In It Anyway??


When I asked the pleasant employee what was in these "Plant Based" concoctions, she informed me that for the Cacao version they use a banana-date syrup (color me impressed), cold brew coffee, cacao powder and their plant based protein powder...HMMMMMMMM....

For their Almond version, they replace the cacao for almond butter.


WHY PROTEIN BASED POWDER?!!!

Starbucks is falling into the same trap as most uninformed people in assuming that a Plant Based lifestyle needs extra protien!!

No, we don't need more protein people!! So while my variations taste WAAAAAAAAAAY better, you are not going to get a straight comparison when it comes to the amount of protein they boast about their drinks. But you also won't get carrageenan and other additives from their powder. You're welcome.


So, Drum Roll......HERE IT IS!


Plant Based Frozen Cafe Drink (straight coffee flavor)

-1 cup cold strong coffee

- 1/3 cup raw cashews, soaked in boiling water for 30 mins then drained

- 1 pitted date, soaked in boiling water for 30 mins then drained*

-1/4 tsp vanilla

-6 ice cubes


Plant Based Frozen Cacao Drink

Cafe drink recipe above plus:

- 1 Tbsp unsweetened cacao powder

- plus 2 additional dates, soaked and drained*


Plant Based Frozen Almond Drink

Cafe drink recipe above plus:

- 2 Tbsp almond butter, creamy & unsalted

-plus 2 additional dates, soaked and drained*


*Adjust the amount of dates to your sweetness preference

Simply add all ingredients to a high powered bender and blend away for 30-60 seconds. Soaking the cashews and using a good blender is important to get that velvety texture and make sure you don't end up with little bits of cashews.


For a kid-friendly or non-caffeinated version, replace the coffee with you preferred non-dairy milk!!
